Questions and Answers about Islamic Veil

Muhammad Ghazālī عَـلَـیۡـهِ رَحْـمَـةُ الـلّٰـهِ الۡـوَالِی: Zulaykhā was an extremely beautiful princess of a western King called aymūs. At the age of 9, she fell in love with Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام after seeing him for the first time in a dream. Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام was tremendously handsome. When he عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام was brought to the Egyptian market, Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ raised the veil from his real beauty and people frantically rushed to see him. As a result of this stampede, 25,000 men and women died. (Another) 5000 men and 360 virgin women died due to his unimaginably great beauty. Zulaykhā was  an idol-worshipper. She made many attempts to seduce Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام. With the passing of time, she became old, blind and poor.

When Sayyidunā Ya’qūb عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام arrived in Egypt, Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام greeted him with his armies. Zulaykhā stood there holding a woman’s hand, and told the woman to alert her when Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام arrived. When the woman informed her, Zulaykhā called out to him, but could not attract his blessed attention. Sayyidunā Jibrāīl-e-Amīn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام arrived, took hold of his mule’s bridle and said, ‘Descend and reply to this woman.’ He عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام disembarked and asked, ‘Who are you?’ Zulaykhā threw sand on her head and said, ‘I am Zulaykhā who has devoted her life to you.’ By the command of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ, he عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام asked her what she wanted. She expressed her desire to marry him. He عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام replied, ‘How can I marry an unbeliever?’ Glory to Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ in the highest! Sayyidunā Jibrāīl-e-Amīn عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام touched Zulaykhā, restoring her previous youth and unparalleled beauty. She repented from idolatry and became a believer. Sayyidunā Ya’qūb عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام married her to Sayyidunā Yūsuf عَـلٰى نَبِـيِّـنَا وَ عَـلَيْـهِ الـصَّلٰوة ُ وَالـسَّلَام. It is said that after becoming a believer when Sayyidatunā Zulaykhā رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهَا became Sayyidunā Yūsuf’s
